I guess I do not feel as threatened as many residents do regarding the issue of open space. Even though we may not have that much space within the legal borders of the borough, we have a beautiful park on our northern border which goes all the way to Bear Mountain: Palisades Interstate Park. I also feel as though I was misled because some of the council members made statements which led me to believe that the owner of GEM was thisclose to building townhouses on the property and that was not even close to the truth. I do not understand the urgency of the matter when nothing is happening. He can't build anything there without going before the appropriate boards and that has not happened. The owner says he wants to keep it a marina. Let's try and work with him to get the deed restriction and do it with minimum cost to the Edgewater/NJ taxpayer (grant money comes from taxpayers too!). The borough is growing and we will have other needs in the future. Who knows if we will have to take over the George Washington school again? That will be very expensive to bring up to code. The borough was in a fiscal crisi in the 1970's. No one wants to get in that situation again. Right now, the economy is booming but we all know how quickly a bust can occur.
