Such a disappointment!

I attended the Council Meeting on Monday Night. IT wasn't the first one, but this one was as bad as some of the others. No-one got slugged this time, or threatened to walk out. Nonetheless, it was full of personal attacks, innuendo, outright namecalling and general grandstanding by certain members of the Council. Some council members were clearly more interested in campaigning from the dias and playing to the audience than they were in conducting Boro business. I, for one, love politics, and love to see politicians on the stump. However, a Boro Council meeting is not the place for such antics. The agenda was lengthy and of some import. Yet, much time was wasted by one Councilwoman calling another names, accusations were even made regarding posts on the internet ( the assumption being the Council members were posting under assumed names). The meeting went on til after midnight and was like going through the looking glass with Alice. Much time was spent discussing who said what regarding where someone lived, yet almost nothing said about the wonderful Arts Festival, the 9-11 memorials planned. Several members of the audience spoke regarding various concerns, and most of the time people were courteous and listened. Several times, however, when an opinion was expressed by a citizen that was in variance with the majority present, the catcalls and nasty comments reminded me of a high school football game. The maestro addressed the group to express his dismay at the negative attitudes and personal attacks he had witnessed and he was actually booed. This is a man of international experience and acclaim. He is erudite and quite intelligent. He is also a kind-hearted warm human being who wants to do good things for Edgewater and her citizens. He did not deserve the disrespect he was shown. This is not the first time he has been so rudely treated, and he is a reasonable man who speaks with sense, whether you agree with him or not. Yet other citizens stood and talked about other things, one man was just off the wall (I won't mention the subject of his statement because that would readily identify him) yet the crowd was more respectful to him than to the maestro. Why? Aren't all citizens entitled to the same respect, or maybe you have to have lived here forever to be entitled to be treated like an equal member of society. I was and remain sorely disappointed in our community that we participate in and condone such behavior.
