You're asking the WRONG person about those health club things. Jim does physical work for his exercise and then reverts back, as soon as possible, to his basic lazy self.
Calahan's is gone, just recently, but there is another franchise in Little Ferry on Rt. 46. Hiram's is still hanging in there. Probably the same guys sitting on the stools that you remember too. Probably the same stools too, LOL.
I didn't grow up in Edgewater. We had to take a bus to Palisades Amusement Park (we just called it "Palisades" back then) and actually hoof it the couple of blocks to get our Calahan's and DQ. Got in with our "Pally" matchbook cover discount coupons too. Calahan's was just a roadside stand back then. As we got older we came in cars (still toting the Pally matchbooks) and learned about our first traffic jam. I remember my mother telling me that when she and my father were dating, they'd take the ferry over to the park and have dinner at Calahan's. That was before the GWB. Wonder if dad had a couple of Pally matchbooks?
