[Politics/Elections] Setting the record straight

There has been much hullabaloo lately on this board about what a detriment the ICBE, its members, and Council representatives have been to Edgewater.

Let's be clear: The local Democrats have and had the vote to do, not do, or in many cases undo what has happened in Edgewater. That includes traffic, pollution, overdevelopment, lack of affordable commuting options, raising taxes, non-sheltering bus shelters, diminished parking for residents, uncontrolled mudslides in Shadyside, dirt piles, COAH non-compliance, Police Station in shambles, skyrocketing taxpayer costs for Marina, Park, and Ferry, no sidewalks for seniors by the Waterford, toxic sites left to seep for decades, pay-to-play politics, increased town debt to over $27MM... and that is just to name a few.

This is all Dems, all the time. The Dems control the vote. Period. So if anyone wishes to blame the ICBE for anything that has gone "wrong", as ex-Councilwoman Fein did on 12/19/05 when she violently shrieked at me from the dais saying that the reason we didn't have a ferry yet was my fault (me, one person, no vote as I wasn't on Council yet - desperately ridiculous on the face of it), they need to stop and take a look at themselves.

The Dems have controlled the vote for decades. The public rapidly noticed that Edgewater was not moving forward and got tired of broken promises. Result? Since the ICBE inception in 1999, it has only taken us six years to get three candidates on Council. Why? Surely it wasn't the special interest, pay-to-play campaign money or the glossy brochures stuffed in mailboxes... How? By not making promises we can't keep.

If democracy is what we are after, then we must level the playing field. If Dem supporters are so sure that their party is what is best for our town, then they need to prove it, not just to me or ICBE supporters (and Independent voters!) that they so revile, but to the public at large. My hope is that Neda and her young running mate will do the right thing and give up the hundreds of thousands of dollars of special interest money and commit to a debate. But if they continue to rely on big contributions from borough "professionals" and developers to attempt to win elections, then who do they truly represent?

So, next time someone wants to blame the ICBE for something that has not happened or run amok, then they should look to their Dem Council representatives for answers... Who's responsible now?
