In Response To: How I'm going to vote (Beth)
Dear Beth; I don't agree with your conclusions and I will explain, but at least you sound sincere and reasonable. I applaude you for that. Everyone wanted development in this town. The proplem arouse in that the concessions made to the developer at every turn became unbelievable. As one who attends most council and planning Board meetings it became apparant that if a developer wanted something he would get it. We are proud of the development, but development should have been done with a plan. A facilties management plan that shows what the impact (infastructure, traffic, garbage, education etc,) will have on the existing community. We built wthout one and that was not responsible. The developers wanted to build and get approvals fast. Bryan wanted to give the concessions, and because he controlled the council, bd. of adjustment, and planning board had practically every demand by a developer passed. Do you know that our present Planning Board is being sued by the developers who are building the new movie complex? Do you know why? The planning board finally said no to something. When the developer came before the board and asked to change their existing approval from a 14plex theatre to a 16plex theatre, and thus change the approved design of the building the Planning Board said No. THE DEVELOPER SAID THIS DECISION WAS ARBITRARY, AND SUED. THEY FELT THAT WAY BECAUSE IN THE PAST EVERY OTHER CONCESSION WAS GRANTED,SO WHY WASN'T THEIRS. From their point of view it was arbitrary. That is the problem we have created but constantly giving in to the developers. The coalition just wants to put future restraints on development to make sure we preserve what little we have left. They want development, but they want responsible development. The park was phoney issue. Do you know that we are in defiance of NJ State law by prohibiting the park only to residents of Edgewater. That is not the coalition positin that is the State position. We havn't saved the park from anybody. It is an arguement meant to scare people. The boro of North Haledon was recently sued and lost an appeal in State Supreme Court forbidding a non resident from using a boro park. Beth, don't be fooled. We are not going to be overrun by outsiders because the park is or is not open. I wanted to try without insult to show you what the coalitions concerns are. They are very legitimate, and are only trying to protect your rights as a resident. As far is not having concrete ideas, they do. But first they must sit face to face with the developers and negotiate terms that really are acceptable to all. That will take strict adherence to zoning, and the various variances that should be developed and are already in place. If we do we will have an even more beautaiful town, one that will raise our real estate values to levels we never dreamed about. That is a possibility, if we do not strive for that because we are afraid the developers will sue us our pull out, then we will all suffer. I hope I make some sense to you.
