Clerks->Mallrats->Chasing Amy are the movies that make up the New Jersey trilogy by Kevin Smith, himself born and raised around Red Bank/Leonardo, NJ. Clerks is about repetitiveness and boredom, so certain lines are repeated throughout the film, and that's one of them.

As far as the charcoal sketch, well, that's Joe Q. Edgewater trying to make sense of this endless bickering. ;)
