What've You Against 125th St.?

All:

I forget... why the *heck* does it matter where on the Manhattan side the ferry slip is? After all, y'all are just leaving Edgewater to get into Manhattan... presumably once there, you'd hop on a Waterways bus *anyway*... take it to either the cross street closest to your building off of a major thoroughfare (such as 34th or 42nd Streets), OR to a mass transit connection. The fact is you will NEVER spend more than 10-15 minutes (possibly longer off-peak) in that area -- or at any other NY Waterway terminal for that matter. (Of course, you're perfectly free to lounge at a terminal all day if you want.)

All of this silliness about crime, etc. in the vicinity of Harlem is a pathetic argument, since a ferry terminal would a) be very well lit, b) be tended to during all hours of operation, and c) well-populated by the hundreds if not thousands of your fellow commuters at any given time.

Oh yes, the 26th Precinct (which covers this area) has had a precipitous drop in crime in the past decade (one murder, zero rapes YTD 2003, compared to 14/26 in '93; five robberies in 2003 vs. 772 in 1993, etc. I could go on, but check it out yourself here: http://home.nyc.gov/html/nypd/pdf/chfdept/cs026pct.pdf). The police, I'm sure, will make the ferry terminal a frequent stop on their beat.
This location will hardly be like the midnight wasteland that many of you seem to be so afraid of.

Stop thinking about Harlem -- or anything north of 96th Street, for that matter -- in such backward terms, and you'll see that 125th Street is a great location. The infrastructure is right there -- across the Hudson River -- ready for use. Hopefully baseless fears won't prevent it from coming true.
