Response to the talk of drug dealers

Posted By: Someone who would know...
Date: Sunday, 6 July 2003, at 2:25 a.m.

I recently stumbled upon this message board and I have been reading past entries about the concerns and opinions the residents of Edgewater have. I am not a resident of Edgewater but drawn to the atmosphere, I spend a lot of my time there. Although I'm sure residents do not necessarily like the traffic situations or other problems which have been discussed on this board, many non-residents are fascinated by the city-like environment that Edgewater offers. I am not a big visiter to the city because it is a little too much excitement for me to handle at once. However, I love the view of the city from Edgewater, walking along the Hudson during the summer nights, shopping in the commons where you can find stores for almost all your needs, and I can't forget the friends I have grown up with over the past few years.

These friends would be the so-called "drug dealers" on Undercliff Avenue. While I can not say they all are perfect angels, I can also not read everything everyone had to say without giving my knowledge and opinion about my friends. Before anyone listens to rumors and starts throwing accusations around, please first read what I have to say and at least take it into consideration.

First of let me explain the house at the top of Hillyard which was mentioned earlier. The "rough" image of some of the people who hang out there can give strangers a negative opinion of them which I guess is understandable. This house belongs to one of the teens who hangs out with his friends in front. Before catholic high schools separated my group of friends in my town, we used to spend ALL of our summer days hanging out in front of someone's house. Most towns don't really offer anything for teens to do besides "hang out," I know for a fact that mine didn't. I know a large group of kids who seem to just be standing around doing nothing looks suspicious but it's really innocent. The house on Undercliff probably became the "hang out" because it's right in the middle of everything. Any of their friends who have nothing to do at night can come stop by and socialize since you can't miss them. Most of the time they only hang out for a little while until someone stops by with something to do for the night and then they leave and go their separate ways. What they do is not different than what every group of friends does during the summer. It's just so noticeable in Edgewater because of its layout. As we all know, Edgewater consists of two main streets, River Road and Undercliff Avenue. River Road is home of stores and places of business while Undercliff is more residential so when there's a group of people hanging out, everyone is bound to take notice.

I have to say that this group of kids who are thought of as nothing more than "drug dealers" and I believe someone even said something along the lines of "jail bait" are a good group of kids. I'm glad I have had the chance to get to know them better over the past few years. Of course you have your trouble makers in every group, but some of them I would even consider to be best friends. It really upsets me to think that in 2003 people can be so judgemental. They are actually a very approachable group of people even if they might not seem that way. I guess it all goes back to what my mom and grandma always said, "never judge a book by it's cover."

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and I would never expect anyone to keep their opinion to themself. I think difference in opinion is what makes the world go 'round and it is such a great thing that residents of Edgewater have a place to discuss their opinions and thoughts. I just hope everyone can think of their group of friends and what they used to do when they were younger or what they do now, depending on their age. Every generation has their problems with popular drugs at the time and every single town, whether or not the residents like to admit it, has teens as well as adults who use illegal drugs. If there was a problem with drugs or gangs on Undercliff Avenue, I'm sure it would have been dealt with by now and I'm sure the Edgewater Police know the troublemakers in every group that hangs out in Edgewater. While it is a great idea to keep an eye on crime in every neighborhood, I can say that I have never felt unsafe at any time while in Edgewater. Also as far as the graffiti problem that was discussed earlier goes, I have never seen a problem with that in Edgewater. I have also never heard stories of gang related activity or involvement and I think I would honestly know more than anyone else who has posted since I'm always around these alleged "gang members." I would never put myself in a position in which I felt unsafe. Growing up in an excellent family and having started a great future for myself, I would not feel safe associating with drug dealers and gang members.

Sorry for such a long post but my feelings about this are very strong and I felt that something had to be said. I hope everyone can feel safer in their own neighborhood and if anyone has questions feel free to post replies which I would be happy to answer in order to help you feel even more comfortable. Even though you all have concerns and problems with things going on in Edgewater such as traffic and councilmembers, you live in such a beautiful town and you should be proud of all that it has to offer. I look forward to many more years of taking advantage of all those offerings.

Just a side note...the "gangsta" music that was mentioned in an earlier post may not be to anyone else's liking but it's not all that "today's teens" listen to. Every generation has it's music that can not always be appreciated by other generations, my grandmother even told me that the generation before Elvis did not appreciate his music at all. He has now turned out to be a legend in music. Growing up in my family I learned to appreciate the music my parents and grandparents always played. I even find myself leaving songs on the radio that I remember listening to with my parents on our family outgoings when I was little. I know teens don't always like to let it be known, but we do appreciate and learn from things our parents exposed us to and taught us. We all go through our rebellious stages but after that all the lessons and morals that we were taught really start to show and we are then able to apply them to everyday life.
