Wait a second ...... if the first year A.D. was 1, then it was the first year, and so 2000 will be the 2000th year. So we need to think about what we are celebrating. If we're celebrating the fact that we have reached the 2000th year, and not that we have COMPLETED 2000 years, then it still works ok. I always think about that with birthdays-since your first year is from 0 to 1, when you turn 1 you are 1 all year but you are actually in your 2nd year! So when you turn 40, you have already lived 40 years, you're not starting your 40th year but your 41st. I'm rambling and I'm going to sleep now.
