There is a very interesing article on the front page of the Sun Bulletin of 10/8/99 on the subject. Doug Hall and Estelle Farhi quote an unnamed Cliffside Park official as saying "We really don't want Oxen Hill opened." The story traces the issue back three years. At that time, Edgewater Commons shopping center opened, resulting in a drastic increase in traffic on Oxen Hill Road. This upset many Cliffside Park residents, particularly, according to reports, its Mayor Gerald Calabrese who lives at the top of Oxen Hill Road. Suddenly and conveniently, Cliffside Park decided that a 90 year old retaining wall was about to collapse, and so the road had to be closed. Edgewater fought this action agressively in court and after three years of litigation by Edgewater and procrastination by Cliffside Park, the road opened on Friday. A few days earlier, though, Cliffside Park's Borough Engineer reported to their Mayor and Council that he found a culvert under the road in need of repair and a pipeline in the culvert in need of realignment in order to go forward with the repair. So, enjoy Oxen Road while you can, it is unlikely to remain open for long. Instead of taking shoppers to and from Edgewater Commons, it looks like Oxen Hill road will shortly become, once again, a one way street heading straight for State Superior Court.
