Some thoughts on the ferry

I am going to be very brave and add my two cents regarding the meeting last night. At last night's Council meeting, Mr. Cancro (of the PA) had some very interesting remarks to make. He told the meeting that there were no strings (once again!) on the money offered for the ferry, other than it be used to implement ferry service. Ms. Bardinas asked if there was any time obligation, if the Council said yes to the ferry, how long would they be obliged to keep ferry service if they decided it didn't work out. Mr. Cancro said that it could be terminated at any time. He also said that the funds could be used to build mini-terminals at any proposed site, and this sounded like a great idea. For example, he said, take the Grand Cover site. If you decided to put a ferry stop here (where a park is planned), then the funds could be used to build a small shelter, that could house restrooms, coffee counter or ticket sales. That sounded great to me, since if this site is to be used as a park, then restrooms would be needed. This would save the Boro construction costs by combining the use of the shelter. It need not be large, but could be a combined use building.
Ms. Bardinas was also concerned that if a prospective rider missed one ferry, that a wait of half an hour for the next ferry would not be convenient. And the motivation for taking the ferry would have to be convenience. People would have to wait outside in the cold or rain. That much was true, but it seems to be that the same could be said of missing a bus. Although the bus sometimes runs faster than this, it does not always. Once again, a small shelter could be considered *convenient* (especially if you could have coffee while you wait!) and is more than many bus stops offer now.And the building of a shelter would alleviate some of the unpleasantness. Even missing a ferry could still be faster than spending that much time or more sitting in traffic on the GW!
Although some Council members said they did not believe him, Mr. Cancro said that whatever improvements were built to accomodate the ferry would remain the property of the town, even if the town later voted to end the ferry service. This would mean that a properly planned =mini-terminal= could have multiple uses and greatly benefit the town. It brings to mind a ferry service I saw in Seoul. Keeping in mind that some parts of Seoul are like mini police states, with armed soldiers patrolling the streets. The terminal area housed a small police sub-station, a kiosk for newspapers and other small necessities, public restrooms, and a ticket booth. Add a few picnic tables and this would greatly enhance a small park like the Grand Cove site.
On a lighter note, Ms. Merse asked if these shelters could be enlarged to include the municipal building she wants! She said that might make her in favor of the ferry if the PA would fund the construction of such a multi use facility. This brought some laughter!
I was a little disappointed that so few citizens attended the meeting, but perhaps the temperature outside caused some to stay home. All in all, it was a meeting with a little less rancor than others I have attended, yet some important business was accomplished...parking ordinance, etc.
